A single-light Maria Theresa chandelier retains the crystal-dressed silhouette of its larger counterparts. Other designs suspend cut-crystal pendants from a gold-plated frame or cradle a cut-glass bowl in brass oxide metalwork.

Among the Murano glass pieces are orbs held in ornate cast-brass fittings and a diffuser blown into a steel cage, its rounded form enclosed by the metal framework.

Crystal Detail and Glass Colour

Clear crystal drops make a feature of their cut edges, while sapphire-blue crystal flowers introduce a stronger accent of colour. Murano glass offers a different palette, with amber, amethyst, smoked and clear options available on selected designs.

Gold-plated metalwork can echo the warmer tones of the glass; chrome provides a cooler contrast.

Choosing the Shape and Drop

A rounded pendant gives a different silhouette from an open lantern or a chandelier with curved arms. Above a table, consider how that outline relates to the furniture beneath it; in a hallway, allow enough clearance for people and doors.

Check the pendant’s body height as well as its overall drop, including any chain or suspension. A shallow ceiling design and a long suspended pendant need quite different proportions of space, even when their diameters are similar.
