Luxury Crystal Chandeliers in Classic, Empire and Contemporary Styles

Handmade Crystal Chandeliers: Glass, Crystal and Metal

Depending on the design, cut-crystal pendants are paired with hand-blown glass arms, glass-clad frames or exposed decorative metalwork. The combination of materials gives each chandelier its own appearance, from ornate, traditional detailing to simpler, more contemporary lines.

Crystal glass is classified according to its composition under recognised standards. Full lead crystal contains at least 30% lead oxide, while lead crystal contains at least 24%. Lead oxide increases the refractive index of the glass, contributing to the brilliance of cut crystal.

One design in the collection combines a hand-blown glass body made in Tuscany with a glass cup made in Venice and cut-crystal flowers. Available in finishes including shiny gold, satin chrome and black nickel, it illustrates how glass, crystal and decorative metalwork can work together within a single chandelier.

Complement your chandelier with our classic crystal wall lights, including chandelier-style sconces and designs with cut-crystal pendants.

Empire and Classical Crystal Chandeliers

Classical crystal chandeliers draw on established European design traditions, each with its own distinctive approach to ornament and proportion.

The Empire crystal chandelier takes inspiration from early nineteenth-century French design. Crystal swags and cascading drops are arranged beneath a decorative frame, often in a gold finish. The symmetrical form suits formal dining rooms and drawing rooms, while smaller designs work well in hallways and on landings.

Maria Theresa chandeliers are associated with the Viennese Baroque tradition. Their frames feature curved glass elements, crystal rosettes and suspended cut-crystal pendants, creating an ornate appearance with plenty of detail.

Murano chandeliers reflect the Venetian tradition of glassmaking. In this context, cristallo refers to clear soda glass that can be shaped while hot into flowing arms and decorative forms. Rather than relying solely on cut crystal, these chandeliers are valued for the clarity of the glass and the craftsmanship of their shapes.

Contemporary crystal chandeliers use the material in cleaner, more open designs, with simpler silhouettes suited to modern interiors.

Statement Crystal Chandeliers for Staircases and High Ceilings

Cut crystal catches and refracts light, creating points of brilliance across surrounding walls and ceilings. The size of the chandelier, the arrangement of its crystal elements and the height at which it hangs all influence the effect.

In a stairwell or double-height entrance hall, a multi-tiered staircase chandelier can fill the vertical space and provide a focal point from several levels. Above a dining table, its proportions should complement the table while allowing sufficient clearance for people seated beneath it.

When choosing a crystal chandelier for high ceilings, consider both the diameter and the suspension drop, as well as the chandelier's weight and the suitability of the ceiling support. Our guide to large chandeliers: sizing, weight and installation covers these practical considerations in more detail.

For rooms where a suspended chandelier would hang too low, explore our classic crystal ceiling lights, including flush-fitting designs with crystal pendants and decorative metalwork.
